International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It has been a year with so much momentum for same-sex marriages and that’s being celebrated today on International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia.

“There’s a greater awareness to the issues around homophobia.  Canada was one of the first pioneers to have same-sex marriage at the national level but now we’re seeing the momentum in the United States and other countries,” says Noble Kelly with the Pride Education Network.

That momentum includes three US states voting in favour of legalizing same-sex marriage in the last year (Maryland, Maine, Washington), bringing the total number of states to 12 plus Washington DC.

“It’s often a political topic that many politicians, as part of their platforms, need to start addressing and have been. I think that’s another milestone that we’ve seen happen in recent history,” says Kelly.  He adds it’s fully legal across 14 countries.

Kelly also makes note of Jason Collins, who earlier this month became the first professional athlete to come out.
