Court hears Mountie’s drug-stealing history

KELOWNA (NEWS1130) – A sentencing hearing for a former Mountie charged with stealing drugs from a police evidence locker in Merritt has been delayed until July.

A hearing to determine what punishment Stewart Seib will receive heard earlier Monday that the former staff sergeant and head of the Merritt detachment had a history of drug theft that started in a previous detachment.

Seib pleaded guilty last May to stealing crack cocaine in Merritt.

He was suspended in January 2012, when charges of theft under $5,000 and breach of trust were laid.

A provincial court in Kelowna heard Monday that Seib began stealing drugs from the Clearwater detachment in 2010 and was using them in an effort to deal with depression.

His lawyer is asking for an absolute discharge while the Crown is suggesting the 54-year-old officer receive a two-year conditional sentence.
