SQUAMISH (NEWS1130) – The RCMP dive team will spend the day searching for an elderly man whose canoe was found overturned in a channel near Squamish.
The Coast Guard didn’t find any sign of the man during the search involving its boats, a helicopter from Comox, volunteers, and the RCMP.
“Nothing was found and we’re standing down the Coast Guard and Air Force side of the search; the RCMP are taking over, at this point, as a missing persons case,” says Coast Guard Captain Eric Niemi.
A couple along the shore who saw the man paddling called 9-1-1 when he suddenly disappeared.
“No signs whatsoever… no splashing in the water, no nothing. He was in the canoe and then the canoe was upside down and nobody has seen any signs of him whatsoever since then,” describes Niemi.
He adds they still don’t know the man’s identity. Anyone with information is asked to call the RCMP.
