VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Canada added a stunning number of jobs in May, but BC didn’t participate, and an economist says you shouldn’t read too much into it.
Nationwide, employment increased by 95,000 last month, all of it in the private sector and most of it full-time.
TD Bank senior economist Sonya Gulati says the six-month average will be about 19,000. She says the month-by-month job numbers “have been extremely choppy.”
Gulati says the variability in BC’s job stats is among the highest, making it hard to interpret trends.
Our province lost more than 15,000 full-time jobs last month but gained nearly as many part-time positions.
BC’s unemployment rate rose 0.4 per cent to 6.8 per cent, while the national rate fell 0.1 per cent to 7.1 per cent.
