Surrey man pleads guilty to killing wife

SURREY (NEWS1130) – A Surrey man has pleaded guilty to hacking his estranged wife to death at the newspaper office where she worked. The attack happened in July, 2011.

This development comes as a bit of a surprise, as 28-year-old Manmeet Singh’s trial was set to start today for the horrific daytime attack at the office of a weekly South Asian newspaper (Sach Di Awaaz) in Surrey.

Singh’s guilty plea to second-degree murder means he will receive an automatic sentence of life in prison; Crown and Defence have agreed he should not be eligible for parole for 16 years.

Ravinder Bhangu, 24, worked as an administrative assistant and the couple had been married for two years but separated just months before. Witnesses say Bhangu ran through the offices, yelling “Save me” and a Good Samaritan tried to get in the way of the attack.

Blajinder Gill taught dance with Bhangu and says she’s satisfied by today’s development but it doesn’t bring her friend back. “Her life is gone and it’s gone in a very bad way, it was a brutal murder.”

She says dealing with her loss hasn’t gotten any easier. “Her students are suffering, her parents are suffering. We will never forget her. It’s a big loss.”
