MOOSE JAW, SK(NEWS1130) – Now entering his 12th week on the road, Breyden Erickson has seen rain, snow, wind, lightning and even tornado warnings.
The 18-year-old has a friend battling Leukemia and this has inspired him to help make a difference in the fight against cancer with a cross-Canada walk. He’s trying to raise over $320,000.
Three months into his trek, he’s in southern Saskatchewan where he continues to meet amazing people.
“A couple of employees from the camp site I’m in right now went around and talked to everybody and collected about $100 for our expenses,” he says.
But back to the weather, which Erickson says has been awful.
“Really unpredictable out here, nice and sunny and warm one day, shorts weather. The next thing I’m getting pelted with rain and hail,” he notes.
People have been greeting Breyden almost every step of the way, but he says Medicine Hat, Alberta marked a turning point for his journey.
“We had an acting mayor and we had people from the local gas station give us a gift card, and someone from the cancer research society came out to meet me. We just had a bunch of people there, it was really cool,” he says.
Erickson admits he often asks himself ‘What am I doing?’
“It hasn’t necessarily been about the weather or my feet. It’s just what else I could be doing. But I thought I’ve come this far and put a lot of commitment into it so I have to finish what I’ve started.”
Regina is in his sights and then on to Manitoba.
