Vancouver Park Board talks bike safety on causeway

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Safe travel for cyclists is on the agenda at the next Vancouver Park Board meeting.

Cycling advocates have named the park board in a petition calling for safer solutions to the route, after the death of a cyclist in May.

That caught the attention of Park Board Commissioner Constance Barnes, who will bring forward a motion on June 24 calling for immediate and long-term solutions to the Stanley Park causeway.

“We are encouraging people to get out and walk and bike, and I think if we’re not looking at the safety issues, it kind of defeats the purpose to have people out on their bikes if they’re not safe.”

Although the route falls under provincial jurisdiction, Barnes says the park board must get involved in the shared pedestrian and cyclist path.

“I also believe it’s our job to advocate. So advocate to the province, and advocate to the other organizations that have a lot of really good work already done and sit down and just say collaboratively what we can do to make sure that this never happens again.”

Barnes has already met with several pedestrian and cyclists groups, and invites all interested parties to come to the meeting on June 24. Her motion will call on all levels of government to get involved as well.

“The more people at the table, the better. This is not about politics, this is about safety. We’ve lost a life here and it is not an option for us to not acknowledge that…we just need to make sure that this never happens again.”
