Ride To Conquer Cancer cyclist killed in Washington State

WASHINGTON (NEWS1130) – An accident in Washington State has killed one of the cyclists in the Ride To Conquer Cancer.

The boy, from Victoria, was riding with his mother and uncle when he tried to pass a group of riders at around 10 a.m. yesterday. He lost his balance and fell into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

North Vancouver’s Fraser Mittlestead was on the ride near Arlington and saw a vehicle hit the teen head-on.

“One of our guys gave CPR for five minutes and then paramedics and fire trucks showed up and took over from there, they brought in a helicopter, but after about 30 minutes… they threw the white sheet.”

Organizers say the boy’s name will not be released until all family members have been notified.

They’re still coming to terms with the death of the teen, but organizers say they want the annual event to carry on.

The BC Cancer Foundation’s Doug Nelson says the Ride to Conquer Cancer is about hope and optimism for thousands of people.

“It is a powerful part of what Cancer care and research is in our province and that’s something that we will be continuing.  As I said we’ll be spending the next year making sure that we have everything we can to fully ensure rider safety,” says Nelson.

Nelson says he was touched to hear the family of the Victoria teen was worried about the ride’s future, despite being in shock over the accident that claimed his life.

The fundraiser saw over 2,600 riders cross at the Peace Arch border yesterday for the 200 km ride to Seattle.
