Fall job action could happen in BC schools

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Job action is possible in BC’s schools this fall, and it may have nothing to do with teacher talks — support workers are getting frustrated.

The 27-thousand employees, which include education assistants, bus drivers, maintenance workers and others, have been without a contract for more than a year.

CUPE’s Bill Pegler says they’re looking at job action if they can’t get a new deal. “We’re seeking a fair and reasonable settlement from the provincial government. A funded, fair and reasonable settlement, so that we can have a pay increase. Our members have been without a pay increase since 2009.”

Pegler says they haven’t set a time for job action but he notes bargaining so far hasn’t produced anything.

“Our priority is a settlement , but come September our members are looking to take job action in the event we can’t get a fair and reasonable settlement.”

He says the union has not yet met with the new Education Minister.
