Pickton victims to get memorial in Vancouver’s Crab Park

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Park Board has unanimously approved the construction of a memorial dedicated to the women killed or allegedly killed by convicted murderer Robert Pickton.

The memorial, a wooden pole carved from a red cedar donated by the Klahoose First Nation, will be located in Crab Park with tentative plans calling for it to be up by next Spring.

Kelly White with the Salish First Nation organized the long list of speakers who supported it’s construction during the Monday night meeting.

White says the memorial will serve as a lasting reminder of the 33 women linked to Pickton.

“Everyone has a birth and death sacred rights and these ones were brutally murdered in the worst way and should be no different than anybody else.”

White said a number of well-known carvers have also expressed interest in working on it.

A number of the missing women were from various First Nations in the Lower Mainland and their support was in full force Monday.

Cecilia Point was part of a drum circle at the opening of the meeting and says it’s a necessary tribute.

“It’s important so that people will have somewhere to go. It’s like another grave site for people to go and pay their respects.”

Pickton was convicted of second degree murder in 2007 and given six life sentences but the Crown stayed another 20 murder charges against him.
