Group wants Vancouver Park Board to take over Hastings Park

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The large electronic billboard at the PNE is being referred to as an eye sore by a neighbourhood group that wants to see a change in the way it’s operated as well to who is responsible for Hastings Park.

The group, Friends of Hastings Park, rallied today to raise awareness around the only billboard in a Vancouver park.

Decisions regarding the sign and the park as a whole are made by the PNE.

Linda Shuto speaks for the group and says they’re urging the city to let the Vancouver Park Board take over responsibility of the entire park.

“What we’re talking about is all the decisions made on that site and when there is governance by the park board we think that those decisions will be made in the interest of the public and not just the business interests of the PNE.”

She says messages on the billboard only promote business ventures and fail to mention other aspects like the nature trails.

City council is set to vote on the park’s administrative future in two weeks and she says the board has been advocating to take over responsibility.

Shuto says in the end, their message is simple.

“We want to see this park, treated like every other park in the city.”
