Alberta floods impact BC tourism

By

KELOWNA (NEWS1130) – The tourism industry in the BC Interior is taking a bit of a hit because of the floods in southern Alberta.

About 20 per cent of Kelowna’s tourists come from Alberta during the summer, and a lot of people in Calgary and High River are more concerned about pumping water and sludge from their basements than their vacations right now.

Tourism Kelowna‘s Catherine Frechette says hotel managers noticed a difference over the Canada day long weekend. “A number of them did report having some cancellations because of the situation in Calgary, but they also reported a lot of walk-in traffic.”

She says it usually takes two months before they get hard numbers from local hotels, so it’s hard to say how much of an impact the floods are having.

Frechette can’t say what the floods will mean for tourism going forward over the summer.
