Securing large events no easy task says security expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) Domestic terrorism is nothing new to Canada, the country has seen a number of incidents in the last eight years.

“Since 2005 there’s more than 30 bombs that went off across Canada that were politically motivated by people that have nothing to do with Al Qaeda,” says security expert and former CSIS agent Michel Juneau-Katsuya.

He says making large public events like Canada Day safer isn’t easy.

Putting more uniformed officers in plain view won’t necessarily deter potential terrorists but will make people more likely to come forward with concerns.

Juneau-Katsuya points to the “If you see something, say something” campaign by the US government as an example of raising awareness and says the Canadian government doesn’t have anything similar.

But he also says we’re not as likely to raise a red flag.

“Too often Canadians, they don’t really want to cause any trouble, they don’t really want to get involved so they avert their eyes when really they should be reporting something.”

He says encouraging people to speak up is the first step.
