Should drunk drivers have different coloured plates?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – How would you feel giving convicted drunk drivers coloured licence plates so that you could spot them more easily on the road?

Prince Edward Island’s Transportation Minister is floating the idea and several states in the United States do something similar.

BC Civil Liberties Association Policy Director Michael Vonn thinks it’s a bad idea.

“This is going to do what exactly, other than stigmatize the driver?” she asks.

“Is the idea that somehow police are going to be notified that you’re a potential concern for drinking and driving? That has to be ruled out because they don’t have lawful grounds to pull you over unless they have lawful grounds to pull you over.”

Vonn says there is no evidence she’s aware of that suggests forcing people with DUI convictions to wear so-called scarlet letters would make the roads any safer.
