VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) –  The main draw for this summer’s Odlum Brown VanOpen tennis tournament at the Hollyburn Country Club was released today and Vasek Pospisil, one of BC’s rising stars of the game will compete at this year’s event.

Pospisil, of Vernon returns to the tournament where he played his first professional match at the age of 15.  He was a semifinalist in 2011 and has had an eventful year, reaching the second round at this year’s Wimbledon tournament, and helped Canada’s Davis Cup team defeat Italy in April to advance to the semifinals in September against Serbia.

“The depth of this year’s men’s field is likely the strongest we have had in our history,” says tournament director Ryan Clark, who adds that most every player is a regular at the Grand Slams.

This year’s top seed is Evgeny Donskoy of Russia, currently ranked 65th in the world.  Donskoy reached the second round at the French Oen and the third round at the Australian Open.  Another player to watch is Germany’s Benjamin Becker a veteran of 23 Grand Slam tournaments, who may be best-known for defeating Andre Agassi in his final match at the 2006 US Open.

Past singles champions at the Odlum Brown VanOpen include Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak, and four-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova.  Two main wild card entries in the men’s draw and the women’s main draw players list will be unveiled next week. The $200,000 Odlum Brown VanOpen will be held from July 27th to August 4th at the Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver.
