SAANICH (NEWS1130) – A Saanich man is in police custody after getting caught curled up to a firearm.

Police were called to a domestic assault at around 4:30 a.m. and found a woman with injuries to her face.

Officers went to go speak with her boyfriend and found him asleep on a couch with what appeared to be a long gun or rifle.

Homes nearby were evacuated and the residence was surrounded.

Negotiators contacted the 26-year-old and he was arrested around 9:20 a.m.

“At this time, it is not known why the suspect may have had a weapon. There are a multitude of possibilities. It is possible that he intended on harming himself, harming his girlfriend if she returned, or harming police when they attended to investigate,” Sgt. Steve Eassie says. “We are thankful that this incident ended without anyone being harmed by the weapon.”

A number of charges are expected to be laid.
