More travellers to and from Canada in May, Statistics Canada reports

OTTAWA – Statistics Canada says Canadians took slightly more trips abroad in May while the number of visitors to this country also rose 2.4 per cent in May to 2.1 million trips.

The agency says Canadian residents took 5.4 million trips abroad in May, up 0.4 per cent from April.

Most of the May trips abroad — 4.6 million — were to the United States, a 0.6 per cent decrease from the month before.

Canadians also made more same-day car trips south of the border but fewer overnight trips.

Meanwhile, more than 1.7 million visitors came to Canada from the United States in May — up 2.9 per cent from April.

Visitors to Canada from other countries remained unchanged at 393,000 in May compared with April, with United Kingdom, France and China remaining the top three overseas markets.
