Cdn Red Cross hopes for more donations for AB flood recovery

CALGARY (NEWS1130) – The Canadian Red Cross has raised more than $25 million in donations for flood relief in southern Alberta.
But the organization says it could take years to distribute the money, and that more cash is needed for ongoing relief efforts.
John Byrne, director general for disaster management, says all the donated money will be spent and another $25 million would likely be required.
Byrne notes 95 cents of every dollar is spent directly on those in need.
He says flood-fighting efforts are now moving toward recovery, with case workers helping people on an individual basis with shelter, clothing, food, personal needs, and returning to work.
The Canadian Red Cross distributed emergency supplies during the flood, and also helped with family reunification, registration of more than 91,400 evacuees, while managing or supporting 17 shelters.
