Bike group highlights dangers of Point Grey corridor

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A safety demonstration by a Vancouver bike group Sunday afternoon aimed to highlight the dangers of cycling along the Cornwall and Point Grey corridor as it’s currently constituted.

Kay Teschke with the UBC Department of Public Health says it’s just not a safe stretch of road.

“This corridor is actually the least safe type of route,” she says.

Running into parked car doors and dealing with excessive speed in a narrow 30km/hour zone are just some of the problems.

Lisa Slakov with HUB says there are a number of dangers along the busy stretch of Cornwall from Burrard west along Point Grey Road to Jericho Beach.

The group staged a demonstration to illustrate their point.

“Dooring is a huge one. We’ve got a lot parked cars, we’ve got very narrow lanes and traffic typically going at about 48 kilometres an hour as opposed to the 30 that is signed.”

Slakov says it’s simply a volume problem that can even force bikes onto the sidewalks.

“The sidewalks along most of this route are extremely narrow as well as the road, we have a lot of traffic.”

She says a separate bike lane would solve the problem.

“It’s something like 80 percent reduction in sidewalk cycling when you get the proper cycling infrastructure.”

Slakov says traffic will be able to transition to other major routes like West 4th Ave and Broadway without disruptions.

She also says a dedicated lane would encourage more people to bike rather than drive.
