Cyclists awaiting vote on Point Grey bike lane

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s a big week ahead for cyclists with Vancouver City Council expected to vote on the Point Grey Road bike path.

Cycling advocates are hopeful things go their way, but they’re not taking any time off.

Lisa Slakov with the cycling coalition HUB says the Kits plan is not the end to bike lane expansion, and points to the city’s 20-40 transportation plan as insight into what’s coming.

“Commercial Drive was another area that the city was really hoping to look for better walking and cycling along there. We’d certainly be very supportive of working on that route as well,” she says.

Slakov says her group has another focus as well. “A huge priority for our members is completing the network throughout the city. You know, there are still areas where you’re kinda left high and dry, you’re trying to get to work and all of the sudden the route turns into something that isn’t safe anymore. We’re targeting network completion.”

She adds she’s a little surprised by all the push back to the Kitsilano route since a recent survey showed 65 per cent of people in Vancouver are supportive of the downtown bike lanes, which are already in place.
