Residents say they weren’t consulted over road closure

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The separated Adanac Bike Lane has False Creek and Strathcona residents upset about the related traffic changes in the neighbourhood.

Things got contentious at a town hall meeting Monday night where concerns centred on the consultation process.

“We weren’t properly consulted,” says Scott Mcleod, who lives in the area. “They didn’t work with us to develop a plan that meets our needs, our hopes to have a safe community here.”

The road work gets underway this week and will see a number of changes including closing Union Street west of Main Street to all traffic. That means more traffic on residential streets and Mcleod says they’re concerned about safety.

There is an elementary school and a number of day cares in the area.

Pete Fry with the Strathcona Residents Association says most of the people who live in the area support cycling but that the closure of Union Street will force more car traffic onto smaller residential routes like Milross Street.

He says the city didn’t properly consult people about the changes. “The transportation 2040 plan very clearly lays out a criteria that involves consulting with local stakeholders and a rigorous consultation at that. That clearly hasn’t happened.”

Jerry Dobrovolny with the city says he’s comfortable with the changes and won’t ask council to revisit them.
