Some paramedics not being fully paid: APBC

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Some paramedics in BC say they’re not getting paid since a new payroll system was put into place last month.

Bronwyn Barter with The Ambulance Paramedics of British Columbia says The BC Ambulance Service integrated the payroll and scheduling system with the Provincial Health Services Authority on June 21st.

She says shift work and usual pay issues has made it difficult to enter payroll information into the new system. “The calculations were wrong, the input was wrong, and they weren’t familiar with our collective agreement.”

“We have very different schedules as paramedics with shift work, different idiosyncrasies with our pay and with our job. With the transition into Provincial Health Services Authority payroll, our idiosyncrasies and our different pay issues didn’t fit into the system,” she explains.

Barter says they’ve met with the employer but it doesn’t appear they have a process in place to fix it. “That’s become even more frustrating. A lot of these things you think they have recognized the problem and will fix it, that’s not what’s happening. We’ve basically been told this could carry on until the end of August. During this time we have people that have mortgage payments, issues with creditors and banks because things are being bounced.”

She says they’re looking at all their options, including legal.

Barter says the majority of BC’s 3,700 paramedics are having issues with their pay.
