Local group worried about locations of bike share stations

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A local group is concerned about where bike share stations will be placed following the approval from city council yesterday.

The biggest worry is how the stations will affect the bottom line of shops, says Charles Gauthier with the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association. He says they’re now working with the city to figure out where to put the stations.

“We wouldn’t want bike stations to be located anywhere along Hornby Street that has already witnessed a lot of negative impacts related to the separated bike lanes that were installed a couple of years ago.  We’ll also suggest maybe they use more of the plaza spaces that are available, for example, locations around the Vancouver Art Gallery, maybe there are some locations around the Canada Line.”

He feels there has to be a compromise. “Otherwise it could have some negative impacts on cluttering sidewalks or having an impact on street-level businesses that are reliant on the street parking that is readily available.”

Gauthier feels the city was going to push through with the project regardless of any opposition.

The bike share program will be rolled out next spring. The City of Vancouver is spending $6 million to get it started and then $500,000 every year for operating costs.
