ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – At least 10 people are suing the City of Abbotsford after chicken manure was spread around a site where homeless people typically gather.
The incident occurred early last month and Abbotsford’s mayor and staff have apologized.
DJ Larkin with the Pivot Legal Society says the homeless in Abbotsford are being treated worse than those on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
“One person had a seven hundred dollar tent slashed he says, which was his home. It’s really difficult for someone who is homeless to come forward and say ‘I’m going to take on a lawsuit against the city’, we’re hopeful that as we move forward, more people will come out and say they would like to see justice as well.”
She says they’re also in talks with another group – looking at launching a human rights lawsuit for harassment and discrimination.
While the city has apologized, no one has been fired over the scandal.
