Soil testing near Burnaby school done to settle parents

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – The Burnaby School Board says there is nothing to worry about as Kinder Morgan takes soil samples from the grounds near an elementary school, except no one is saying what they’re looking for.

Board Chair Baljinder Narang says they put in a request to the company after a lot of media coverage surrounding pipelines a couple of months ago.

She says the testing near Stoney Creek Elementary, will hopefully reassure parents and students that the soil and nearby grounds are safe.

“Really we are not aware of any issues that we were worried about at the school board. But given that the public was focusing on it as this came about, when the expansion was being discussed.”

No word when exactly the results will come back, but they’re not expected for several weeks. “Really we’re being a little more proactive in trying to reassure the school communities in those neighbourhoods that, ‘Yes, there is that presence there, but it’s not a concern for the school community at Stoney Creek [Elementary,]” she adds.

The school is located right near the Trans Mountain pipeline.
