UBC wants to be part of bike share program

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver’s new bike share program won’t be up and running until early next year, but some people are already hoping for an expansion.

Phase one of the bike share program will see 250 bikes made available early next year. Phase two, which will come in the spring of next year, will add another 1,250 bikes to the system but that doesn’t include UBC.

UBC’s director of transportation planning would like to see public bikes available on campus one day.

Carole Jolly says there are a lot of students and staff who cycle, though. “Our campus is quite large so cycling is the perfect way to get around campus in a fast and effective way to move from class to class, in what would otherwise take a bit of time.”

Jolly says even if the bike share program doesn’t hit UBC, a lot of people will take advantage of it to get to SkyTrain Stations or bus stops on their way to the university. “We’re excited about the potential to see its introduction in Vancouver, we’ll be watching closely. I think overall its potential to have such a huge, positive impact on achieving a sustainable transportation network.”

The city will pay $6-million up front to get the system running and then a private company will assume all of the financial risk.
