Hastings Park governance rally held ahead of vote

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – With city council voting on the governance of Hastings Park, several groups have rallied to send a message.

They want the Vancouver Park Board to be in charge, saying having control over the PNE doesn’t appear to be legal without further changes by the provincial government to the Vancouver Charter.

Sherry Breshears with Hastings Community Association has questions. “What are the implications, if our government chooses to start handing our parks over to private entities? The city has an obligation, under the charter, to allow park board to govern park lands.”

Lynda Shuto with Friends of Hastings Park says other choices might lead to a court fight.

“If the city proceeds to put the PNE board in charge of this park, then we will have to seriously consider our legal options.”

Speakers representing about nine different groups spoke at the rally. All of them were in favour of park board governance

The city has scheduled a vote for tomorrow.
