Pospisil claims Vancouver Open title

By

WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vernon’s Vasek Pospisil is the 2013 Vancouver Open men’s champion, as he topped Great Britain’s Daniel Evans 6-0, 1-6, 7-5 in the final at Hollyburn Country Club for his fourth career ATP Challenger Tour title.

Pospisil jumped all over his opponent as he cruised to a 6-0 win in mere minutes. Evans responded by breaking Pospisil in the first game of the second set and taking it 6-1, forcing a third-and-deciding set.

The third set was up-and-down for the eventual champion. Evans grabbed an early break to go up 2-1.

Pospisil fought back to level the match when he broke Evans’s serve at 4-2.

With Pospisil trailing 5-4 and serving to stay in the match, he had to overcome a lengthy game that had multiple break opportunities for Evans. The 25-year-old was able to stay composed and escape the game without surrendering a break.

In the next game, Pospisil jumped on Evans and broke the Brit to move within a game of the title. The Canadian finished things off with an ace as he held serve easily.

The match took one hour and 44 minutes to complete.

Pospisil now has two victories this season. He also won in May in Johannesburg, South Africa, and was a runner-up in Rimouski, Que., in March.

In the women’s final, Toronto’s Sharon Fichman fell 6-4, 6-2 to Johanna Konta of Great Britain.
