VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It could reduce overdose deaths and lower the risk of drug abuse; a new report calls for expanded access to treatment for injection drug users.

The report from the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS suggests there access to addiction treatment for drugs like heroin is limited, with long waits in many provinces.

Researchers say there needs to be more effective treatment programs, such as methadone substitution.

The authors also say the use of ineffective and potentially-harmful short-term detox treatments need to be discouraged.

There are up to 125,000 injection drug users in Canada.
