Transportation projects may add to September rush

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – Enjoy these easy, breezy summer commutes — they won’t last much longer.

With a month to go until the September rush, we are looking at some major transportation projects and how they’ll affect your back-to-school and back-to-work drive.

The Port Mann Highway One Improvement Project is working on more improvements to the Cape Horn Interchange.

“Crews are working hard to try and get a couple of the new direct connections at the Cape Horn Interchange open before the end of the summer. So far the weather has really been cooperating and a couple of the new overpasses are very close to being ready. We’ll know more about whether these improvements will be available by September in the next couple of weeks,” says project spokesperson Max Logan.

He says they are also on track to finish widening from Brunette to Cassiar by December, significantly shortening travel time along that section of Highway One.

In the Tri Cities, construction of the Evergreen Line is well underway.

“Work has begun at several areas along the route as our crews begin to construct the stations, the columns and the guideways,” says the project’s executive director Amanda Farrell.

“You’ll see there’s work ongoing in the Lougheed area, the Burquitlam area, in Port Moody at Ioco and just starting up the Douglas College end of the line,” she tells News1130.

Tunnel boring work is set to begin early in 2014 with more updates to come closer to the end of this year.

“Obviously there will be some disruption to traffic but we are very committed to keeping everybody fully informed of the impact and motorists can call our 24/7 information line (604-927-2080) or check our website for the latest on active construction and traffic closures and detours.”
