Royal Canadian Mint unveils coins honouring Prince George

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Royal Canadian Mint unveiled two new commemorative coins and a collector coin set on Thursday, to honour the newborn Prince of Cambridge.

The collector coins were showcased at a garden ceremony hosted by the Governor General at Rideau Hall.

All of the coins honour Prince George by featuring traditional baby items, including rattles, soothers and sippy-cups.

“These coins are exceptional keep-sakes and tangible reminders to Royal watchers and collectors alike, indeed to all Canadians, of this historic occasion,” said Governor General David Johnston.

The 25-cent cupronickel coin depicts a baby carriage with the year “2013″ engraved above.

The $5 fine silver coin features a gold-plated monogrammed “W” and “C” with crowns in the centre, representing the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The edges are covered in baby items like plush toys and tiny shoes.

The fine silver three-coin set shows three heartwarming scenes, including one of a mother, father and baby holding hands.

The coins will be sold at Canada Post outlets, but can be pre-ordered on the Mint’s website.

A spokesperson for the Mint says she expects the coins to sell out quickly.
