MONTREAL, PQ (NEWS1130) – Canada’s Milos Raonic will try to win his first ATP Masters 1000 tournament today on home soil as he faces fourth-seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain in the men’s final of the Rogers Cup.

Raonic advanced to his first Masters 1000 final yesterday with a three-set victory over fellow-Canadian Vasek Pospisil.

Nadal moved on by taking a third-set tiebreaker over top-seed Novak Djokovic. He’s trying to win his third Rogers Cup title in his third appearance in the final. He also won in 2005 and 2008.

The last Canadian to win the event was Robert Bédard in 1958.

The pair have met three times on tour with Nadal winning all three matches. Two of the victories have come on hard courts, and Raonic has never taken a set off Nadal.

Win or lose, the tournament will be deemed a success for Raonic. The Thornhill, Ont. native will officially be ranked in the top 10 in the world when the ATP’s latest rankings are released. He entered the tournament ranked 13th.

Raonic has four ATP titles but they’ve all come in the World Tour 250 series. He won three straight titles in San Jose from 2011-2013 and also claimed the Chenai Open in 2012.

In the women’s final in Toronto, Serena Williams will try for her third title at the event against Romanian Sorana Cirstea.
