Twins waive New Westminster’s Morneau

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (NEWS1130) –  The Minnesota Twins have placed first baseman Justin Morneau of New Westminster on revocable waivers.

It means that any team has 48 hours to claim him, allowing the Twins to negotiate a trade with the team.  If he passes through waivers with no interest, then the Twins can potentially deal him to any of the 29 other clubs.

While Morneau’s numbers are much better this month, he had a terrible July.  After hitting just eight home runs in the first four months of this season, the 2006 AL Most Valuable Player has hit six homers in August, in just 12 games and only 52 at-bats.

There are several teams that could use the 32-year-old Morneau at first base or designated hitter including the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and  Baltimore Orioles, who were rumoured to have serious interest in Morneau in July.

Morneau is hitting .262 this season with 14 home runs and 67 RBI. He has had some great seasons in Minnesota.  The former New Westminster Secondary and St Thomas More Collegiate student became the first Twin since Gary Gaetti in 1987-1988 to hit 30 home runs in consecutive seasons.
