Child left in hot car in Edmonton; father charged

EDMONTON (NEWS1130) – Police are frustrated that the message not to leave children in hot cars doesn’t seem to be sinking in with a lot of parents.

Officers arrested an Edmonton man yesterday after his two-year-old son was discovered in a sweltering car in an underground parkade.

Constable Steven Kilpatrick broke a window and got the boy out. He adds the father showed up 10 minutes later, saying he had gone to run an errand and had lost track of time.

The boy had been in the car for at least 45 minutes.

The 33-year-old man is now charged under the Criminal Code with child abandonment.

In June, a two-year-old boy died in Milton, Ontario after being left in a car on a hot day and his 51-year-old grandmother is charged with criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessities of life.

In July, police charged a Toronto father with child abandonment after a nine-month-old girl was left in a hot car in Oakville, west of Toronto.

There have also been close calls here in BC.
