Most people with herpes don’t realize they have it: study

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A lot of people have it, but most don’t know they carry it.

New Statistics Canada numbers show about one in seven Canadians have herpes, but 90 per cent of those infected don’t realize they have the virus.

The Canadian Health Measures Survey finds the STI infection rate is slightly higher in women than men.

The prevalence rises with age too, from six per cent among people aged 14 to 34 to 19 per cent among people 35 and older.

Some people with herpes find blisters around their private parts, though most people have no symptoms at all.

There is no cure for the disease, but antiviral treatments have been shown to lengthen the time between outbreaks.
