MLB suspends Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster

NEW YORK, NY (NEWS1130) –  Major League Baseball has suspended Boston Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster of Gibsons for five games and fined him an undisclosed amount for throwing at New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez in a game Sunday at Boston’s Fenway Park.

By suspending Dempster, Major League Baseball could be sending a message that intentionally hitting Rodriguez is unacceptable, no matter how they feel about the troubled slugger, who is appealing a 211-game suspension for the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

After plunking Rodriguez in the ribs on a 3-0 pitch Sunday night, Dempster claimed he was trying to pitch inside.  Dempster was scheduled to pitch Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and while he has the right to appeal the suspension, it’s unclear whether he will.  Dempster could still play if he appeals the penalty.
