BC still having issues attracting big budget films

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Smaller productions are still filming in Vancouver, but complaints from those in the industry suggest the city isn’t reaching its potential.

Fifteen TV shows are being produced locally right now.

Some industry experts remain optimistic that productions will pick up, but others still think the filming is flat.

Crawford Hawkins, the Executive Director of the BC council of the Directors Guild of Canada says TV productions are at the same level they have been over the last four years.

“That makes it look like it is better than normal. With 15 series shooting right now, seven of those will end before the end of the year, so we will again be going into next year in the same condition we were in last year.”

He says the problem is that we are not growing.

“If you don’t grow you die. The best I can say is that it is flat to a little down from what it has been over the last number of years.”

But Glenn Bottomley with Local Colour Talent Agency says a lot of TV Movies are coming into town.

“It’s the big features films that we are missing. We are missing some of the other ones like Superman and Fantastic Four to other tax incentives in other places.”
