Good day for Canadians at US Open

NEW YORK (NEWS1130) – A pretty good day for Canadians to open the US Open in New York:  Eugenie Bouchard and Frank Dancevic both won their opening matches.

In her first time in the main draw at the tournament, Montreal’s Bouchard beat Czech Karolina Pliskova 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.  Dancevic, from Niagara Falls, Ontario, beat Robin Haase of the Netherlands 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7).   It’s the fourth time Dancevic has been a the Open and the first time he’s won a match.

Rain suspended Vernon’s Vasek Pospisil’s match against Brazilian qualifier Rogerio Dutra Silva. Pospisil took the first two sets 6-4,6-3 and then started to tire.  Dutra Silva won the third set 7-6 in a tie-break and was up 4-0 in the fourth set when the rain started.  Pospisil also appeared to be suffering from leg cramps.  He’ll have a chance to recover as they’ll pick up the match on Tuesday.

Canada’s big star, tenth seed Milos Raonic will play his first match on Tuesday against Italian qualifier Thomas Fabbiano.
