Whistler giving staff wage bump over the next few years

By

WHISTLER (NEWS1130) – Whistler has signed a four-year wage agreement with its staff, giving employees an almost seven per cent wage increase over the four years.

Mike Furey with the resort municipality is confident they will have no problem paying for the bump.

“We will find the funds to cover the increase internally, by looking at any surpluses we have and our savings. Going forward, we will address those through our budgeting process,” he says.

Furey adds they looked at other nearby municipalities to get comparisons for the agreement. “The City of New Westminster, the Corporation of Delta, the City of Vancouver, the City of Port Moody, and our neighbour, Squamish, have all settled for the same arrangement.”

He says they’ve been working on some efficiency improvements over the last year or so, including reducing the number of general managers from five to three.

The new wage deal is retroactive to January of last year.
