Kettle Society in favour of tower on Venables

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The prospect of condo towers in the Commercial Drive area has created division in the neighbourhood.

While the Grandview Woodland Area Council wants the city to reconsider rezoning, the folks who run a drop-in centre for the mentally ill say they can’t wait any longer for their new centre.

“You should see the line up in the morning. We needed this expansion ten years ago,” says Kettle Society executive director Nancy Keough, who points out a proposed development on Venables will also include much needed housing.

“We’ve had two open houses. The vast majority of people who came were in total support of redevelopment on the site,” she insists.

The society has launched a petition, urging the city of Vancouver to let it apply for rezoning.

Jak King is with the Grandview Woodland Area Council but says he speaks as an individual when taking issue with the development.

“For the Kettle Society to be part of a completely inappropriate highrise in an area that doesn’t need it is unfortunate,” he states.

He doesn’t feel public opinion is on the side of the project.

“I was at their major open house. A vast number of people there were opposed to the idea of a 15-storey tower on that corner.”

The city will decide in September whether to stall rezoning that is part of its Grandview-Woodland Community Plan.
