Dozens of sled dogs in Whistler still looking for new homes

WHISTLER (NEWS1130) – Dog shelters in Richmond and New West are dealing with 50 dogs abandoned at the facilities Friday morning.

While the process of finding new homes for those animals begins, animal shelters continue the search for people to adopt dozens of sled dogs in Whistler.  The huskies became homeless when a sled dog company failed.

Of the 87 dogs entrusted to Whistler Animals Galore (WAG), 41 have found new homes.

“I’m thrilled to be honest,”  says Sue Eckersley with the group.  “We have found amazing homes.”

“People are sort of gushing over how great the dogs that they are adopting are.”

Eckersley herself adopted one of the pooches and says the process is moving along at an expected pace.

“Probably a little bit slower than we had anticipated or hoped but overall super, super happy.”

She hopes things will pick up this month and is also happy they haven’t had to lower their adoption standards.

“We’re hopeful that we can still meet our goal which is closing out the kennel site by the end of September.”

Six of the dogs will remain together in a group setting because they’re not interested in humans.
