No BCTF strike this month as union heads to Supreme Court

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) Good news for parents as we head back to school this week.

There will be no teacher’s strike–at least for the month of September.

President of the BC Teacher’s Federation, Jim Iker, said in an email to members the government and union are postponing bargaining as they head to court.

Iker says 19 days this month have been scheduled in BC’s Supreme Court to hear the readdress of the 2011 ruling declaring the government had violated constitutional bargaining rights.

That ruling found the union has a right to bargain over class size, composition and staffing levels–something the government took away in 2002.

Bargaining is expected to resume in early October.
