Traffic enforcement increases for start of new school year

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Police will have zero tolerance for speeders and distracted drivers when children return to school on Tuesday.  Officers will be out in force across the region, keeping an eye on school zones and other busy pedestrian areas.

Fines start at $200.

“If you’re going over 40 km/h above the speed limit it’s an almost $400 ticket, and we’ll impound your car,” says Constable Brian Montague with the Vancouver Police Department.

“In some cases we’ll be looking at an education, looking at warnings and talking to drivers.  But in cases where you are speeding or on your cell phone it will result in a ticket.”

The speed limit in school zones is 30 km/h and that is in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Montague says officers will also be talking to parents walking their children to school.

“We don’t want them to be distracted either,” he says.  “Watch for cars traveling through the school zones.  Stay off your phones.  If you’re listening to music, think about only having one headphone in.”

Pedestrians won’t be ticketed but Montague says “there is an educational component to our campaigns as well.”
