Fewer people went to the Fair at the PNE this year

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Attendance at the Fair at the PNE is down.

Just over 712,000 guests were welcomed this year, down by about 50,000 — or seven per cent.

Laura Ballance with the PNE says the power outages that affected the fair on two separate days had an impact.

“On the days that didn’t have a power failure or rain on the weekend, are traditionally stronger days. We trended extremely well [on those days],” she tells us.

But Ballance notes attendance was still in the expected range.

“We are very pleased that so many people came out and enjoyed the Fair this year,” she says. “This is the nature of the event industry. Some things you can prevent, some things you can prepare for; some things you can’t. That’s the nature of it.”

She says the five-year plan that began this year, which includes Monday closures, will continue.
