Simple hygiene will keep your kids healthy

CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – Your child will be coming into contact with all kinds of sniffly and sneezy classmates this year, so what can you do to keep those sick days to a minimum?

Medical Health Officer Dr. Michelle Murti says the easiest thing to do is teach your youngster about good hygiene.

“We are trying to encourage general, routine things like washing your hands before meals or after you’ve been playing with toys,” she says. “Certainly we do see [the start of the school year] as a time when people can start picking up things they haven’t been exposed to.”

That’s one of the reasons Murti is recommending young students get their measles vaccinations.

“We are still encouraging people, particularly in the Fraser east area, to get vaccinated,” she says.

“We’re putting up billboards this week along the highway to encourage people to get vaccinated. You can get vaccinated from your primary health care provider, coming into the public health unit. If you’re under five years old you can even get it from your pharmacist.”

Murti says they haven’t seen any confirmed cases of measles over the past few weeks.
