VAG starts search for architect

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – While it has yet to secure the money for a new building, the Vancouver Art Gallery is already looking for design architects.

The gallery has officially launched a search for an individual or company that has experience in building innovative spaces.

Art Gallery director Kathleen Bartels says the building they envision won’t necessarily have to stand out architecturally, but it should elevate visitor experience and be at the forefront of international museum design.

“We are looking for a museum that presents art in the most positive, wonderful way.  We are also looking for something that is inspiring, welcoming and engaging,” she explains.

She points out it’s not that unusual to start looking for a designer before the funding is secure.

“The critical element in fundraising is choosing an architect and having a design. In any major building project, you have to have an architect and an engaging design to get people really excited about the project.”

Qualified architects have a month to submit their names.

The building is expected to cost about $300 million. Only $50 million has been committed by the provincial government.

The gallery is to be located at West Georgia and Cambie.
