New Interac system costly for some small businesses

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Are you still seeing stores with debit and credit machines that are using the old swipe technology?

Stores still have about two years to make the switch but Interac says 90 per cent have already done it.

Dan Kelly with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business says some smaller businesses in BC are finding it hard to make the transition. “Adding new costs to be able to switch to a system, albeit a better system that is more secure, still is difficult for many small to medium sized firms to handle.”

He hopes the industry will be understanding. “We hope the industry as a whole is fair and reasonable about its implementation plan to ensure smaller firms who are struggling to pay their credit card processing fees, so they can handle it.”
