Deal reached in Aquilini divorce

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – One of the owners of the Vancouver Canucks has avoided a divorce trial.

Francesco Aquilini and his estranged wife, Tahliah, have reached a deal last night.

James Keller with the Canadian Press was in the courtroom today.

“Instead of the beginning of the trial, which would have uncovered all sorts of information about the Aquilinis’ business dealings and the ownership of the Canucks that I think he’d rather kept private… instead of that, they’ll show up in court today and let the judge know that they’ve reached a settlement. George MacIntosh has said that what they’ll ask, instead of a trial, is that the case be adjourned today and pick up on Wednesday, when they’ll basically finalize the deal. And that will be the end of it,” says Keller.

It seems privacy was a big factor in the two sides deciding to make a deal.

“They had each publicly said that they were hoping to reach a deal — and they have — but I think weighing on his mind would have been the structure of his company,” says Keller.

“The Aquilini investment group owns the Canucks, it has a lot of other business dealings in construction and development… he’s got the cranberry and blueberry farms out by Pitt Meadows. They didn’t want scrutiny as to the inner workings of that.”

Both sides have publicly said the team would not be affected by the divorce proceedings.
