UBC drops support of frosh event after ‘offensive’ chant

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Frosh week will still happen at UBC next year, but it will go ahead without the support of the Sauder School of Business.

The events covered last week by the Commerce Undergrad Society included a chant advocating non-consensual sex involving underage girls.

Robert Helsley, Dean of the Sauder School of Business says it will now be up to students to facilitate frosh events.

“Having said that I recognize the importance of working with our students and I recognize the importance of orientation activities.”

He says it will support future community and team-building activities, provided the school has credible assurances from the CUS that it will satisfy the university’s standard of appropriate student conduct.

The faculty also promises more emphasis on issues related to respect, dignity and ethics.

Helsley says the school is also looking to find out exactly what happened the day of the chant and is expecting to have a report with the findings by September 16th.

Meanwhile students at the school have mixed feelings about the decision.

“I think it is important for future students because they shouldn’t be deprived of that, it’s not their fault. The guidelines should be a lot more strict regarding that type of situation,” says one student.

“There should be maybe more involvement from the faculty to make sure the students aren’t doing that again,”  says another.
