Thousands lace up for the Terry Fox Run

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – People of all ages and skill levels across Canada are lacing up their shoes for the Terry Fox Run.

Terry’s dad, is at the hometown run in Port Coquitlam today.

He says one of the things he’s most proud of is how much of the money raised goes directly to cancer research. “I can probably say between $0.87 and $0.89 of every dollar that people donate to the Terry Fox Foundation goes to cancer research.”

Rolly says he’s proud of their grassroots beginning, and how they keep it simple every year. “We never set goals. We’re happy with whatever we receive from people. I always tell people that come to the Terry Fox Run, just being there and participating, whatever they can donate we’ll take.”

He says he takes this year’s cancellation of the Abbotsford run in stride, saying Chilliwack picked up extra runners as a result.

Mark Delivuk first met Terry Fox while he training at SFU. “I didn’t know anything about him and what his situation was. I thought, I had a torn ligament and I thought it was kind of the same thing and I just about asked him before he took his track suit off and saw what the injury was.”

That inspired Delivuk who’s been running since the beginning. “The first one was just a community run in New Westminster.”

Rob is a relative newcomer to Canada. “I’ve done one in Whistler, one in Singapore and now one here so I try to join when I can. It was good to see in Singapore, it very much had the same feel as they all do, it was pretty impressive.”
